Stomach cells naturally revert to stem cells

Scientists from the School of Medicine and in the Netherlands have found that a class of specialized cells in the stomach reverts to stem cells more often than researchers had thought. One or more chief cells, which normally make digestive juices in the stomach, have changed into a stem cell in the image shown.

Saturday’s Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics to focus on online social networks

This year’s Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics will focus on online social networks. Jon Kleinberg, PhD, a professor at Cornell University, will deliver the American Mathematical Society lecture at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in Graham Chapel. Kleinberg will speak on “Bursts, Cascades and Hot Spots: A Glimpse of Some Online Social Phenomena at Global Scales.”

Haire-Joshu is named Joyce Wood Professor

Debra Haire-Joshu, PhD, an internationally renowned researcher in obesity and diabetes prevention, has been installed as the first Joyce Wood Professor. This is also the university’s first endowed professorship in public health. Haire-Joshu (left) is pictured with Wood.

Olin hosts business summit on future of evolving global economy

The annual Leaders in Business Summit, held Sept. 25 at the Knight Center, featured several panel discussions with prominent local business leaders and Olin Business School faculty. They discussed the evolving global economy and where it might be heading.
